The article STEM Students Create Winning Invention was about a contest where students make a project that will benefit society. It talked about a wind powered generator idea. This generator would be used to light poor neighborhoods or business's as a cheaper alternative. They also talk about a wind powered phone charger for places with no electricity.
The students were the main brainpower in this project. They came up with the idea and with the guidance of the teacher put it together and made it reality. It ended up being a success and winning the competition. The fact that it was a student powered idea benefited the students greatly. STEM related areas are going to continue to grow in the future. Many new jobs are coming into existence and young kids today will someday fill those. This is a field with many opportunities and no limits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb2Y7ri5lsM Mr.Cowen used many different graphics in his presentation. Everything was very visual which made it way easier to learn. He showed everything he did on the computer step by step and he made finding the websites easy to remember. He also used the 3D printer for us and explained in part how he put it together. Being able to see him use it and watch it function put it into perspective and made it easier to understand this new piece of technology. I can incorporate this into my Genius Hour Presentation by providing lots of examples and visual aids to help listeners understand what I am speaking about.
The author talks about the common misconception which states to be a genius one must be exceptionally smart and have a high IQ. To be considered a genius a person does not need to have an extremely high IQ or grades, he or she must have creative thinking strategies and know how to think not what to think. Geniuses think and strategize by looking at problems in different ways, making their thoughts visible, producing, making novel combinations, forcing relationships, thinking in opposites, thinking metaphorically, and preparing themselves for chance. I can apply this to my own genius hour by looking at my topic from different angles and in turn be able to find new solutions and come up with new ideas.
This article is about how genius hour has been incorporated in other schools. It starts off by giving an example of a student who is incredibly passionate about her genius hour project and is sad when school is cancelled because of a snow day causing her to miss genius hour. It says projects teach kids to learn from failures and what is important is that one learns and reevaluates. Genius hour can also be tough to sell to parents and administration but even parents are seeing the positive effects genius hour is having on students. Teachers can at times have difficulties monitoring so many different projects but with one on one meetings they are able to keep up and manage everything. This article is inspiring and can be applied to my own genius hour project by motivating me to keep on task and work hard.
I intend to accomplish hosting three softball clinics for younger kids. Abby, Sydney, John, and I are all working together to plan this and carry it out. We each will be focusing on a different component of the game. The first clinic will be around December, a second one will be held around February, and a third one will be held in the spring around April. At these clinics we will each focus on our part of the game and the kids will rotate through stations. We will also charge $5 per kid and donate all the money made towards the Kingsford Softball Program.
